Visiting the Southeast Light, Block Island

Block Island is part of Rhode Island, located in the Atlantic Ocean.  It is approximately 13 miles south of the coast of Rhode Island.  There are no bridges to connect the Island to Rhode Island itself, one would have to fly or ride a boat to the Island.  This 7000 acre Island is a popular tourist destination during the summer months.

Most of the visitors either bring their cars to the Island or rent transportation in the Island usually a motor scooter or bicycle. I opted to walk instead.  It was about a 2.5 mile walk from where the ferry stop was and there were hardly any sidewalks to walk through.

This were the pictures I took during my walk.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Below is the beautiful brick Southeast Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1875 and had to be moved in 1983 due to erosion, there was a chance for the lighthouse to fall over the Bluffs. This 2,000 ton lighthouse was moved 300 feet and was designated as a US Historic Landmark in 1997.  To this day this lighthouse is being used by the US Coast Guard as an active navigational aid.

These are pictures I took from the lighthouse tour.  During the tour you get to see the living quarters of the former inhabitants of the lighthouse as well as the fresnel lens.  I was fascinated by the circular staircase made out of iron.

The Mohegan Bluffs are made of clay cliffs located in the Southern shore of Block Island.  There is the 100 plus step staircase going down to the ocean also known as the Corn Cove from the top of the Mohegan Bluffs.  The Southeast Light is right next to the Mohegan Bluffs.

This Seagull is on top of the Mohegan Bluffs.
